These pictures strive to take a different approach to nature photography. Some of them are close ups. But I also explored some photo editing options to try and create abstract and enhanced images. I use Paint.net which is a free (or donation based) photo editing program rather than that well known and expensive program.

Glacier Ice
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/10-IMG_5613_result-11-x-8-5-FINAL-v1.jpgIce compressed into glaciers is very clear since it has very few air bubbles (which are what causes snow or normal ice to be white.) It is also very heavy and very pure water. The zodiac drivers bring it back to the ship so the bar can sell drinks with glacier ice cubes. This ice could be 10,000 years old. Cierva Cove, Antarctica

Fingers and Parkas
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/13-IMG_3938-glacier-ice-11-x-8-5-FINAL-v1.jpgThe zodiac driver pulled a piece of glacier ice out for us to pass around. This is what I got looking through the ice at the people holding it. Wilhelmina Bay/Foyn Harbour, Antarctica

Over Saturated Ice
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/14-IMG_5613_result-saturated-FINAL-v3.jpgThis false color (over saturated) close up pulls out the pattern of the glacier ice. Cierva Cove, Antarctica

Dented Lichen
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/16-IMG_4589_result-Dent-8-5-x-11-FINAL.jpgWe saw a fair amount of lichen. This picture is modified using the “Dent” app that came with Paint.net. Paradise Harbour, Antarctica

Pastel Lichen
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/17-IMG_5600_result-saturated-11-x-8-5-FINAL.jpgThis false color (over saturated) presentation pulls out the range of different colors in the lichen. Cierva Cove, Antarctica

Air bubble erosion
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/18-IMG_5645_result-FINAL.jpgAs air bubbles are pushed out of glacier ice, they start to create crevices along the side of the glacier. These crevices are enlarged by water melt including after becoming icebergs. Cierva Cove, Antarctica

Backwash
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/19-IMG_5683_result-hand-sized-FINAL-v2.jpgWater pushed onto an iceberg by a wave flows back into the ocean. Cierva Cove, Antarctica

Ice pattern

The color of an iceberg
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/21-IMG_5545_result-FINAL-Poar-Inversion.jpgThe original picture of an iceberg captured its gorgeous color combination but wasn’t very interesting otherwise. So I used a photo distortion app called “Polar Inversion” that comes with Paint.net. The white is the above water iceberg and the blues are the below water iceberg and the ocean. Wilhelmina Bay, Antarctica

Antarctic tide pool bubble
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/28-IMG_5976_result-Lens-11-x-8-5-FINAL-v2.jpgWaiting for the zodiac, I suddenly looked down into a tide pool to see these deep green circles. I used a photo distortion app called “Lens” that came with Paint.net. Mikkelson Harbor/D’Hainaut Island, Antarctica

Tide pool vortex

Malachite Ink Sketch
http://photo.chjonesconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/30-IMG_4597_result-Malachite-Ink-Sketch-8-5-x-11-FINAL-v1.jpgI love malachite for both its color and patterns. This captures about a ten foot section of the vein. (There was another similar sized vein below it.) The original picture was not in focus but an app called “Ink Sketch” changed it into a great picture. Useful Island, Antarctica
